About Me
I am a happily married man with a beautiful wife. I have been heavy all my life but over the past 5 to 10 years my weight has exploded. When I met my wife I was 307 lbs, in December 2007 I was 515 lbs and need to get a grip on my weight before it overcomes my good genes which have kept me relatively heathly. But I am playing a game with my life which I will lose if I can't get things turned around.

Hi Chuck,
the protein shakes that I use are pretty similiar to what you typed on your page. It has 30 more calories per shakes, but it also has 5 grams of fiber per serving. That's for the UltraMeal, which you can get regular, soy-based, or rice-based. Your doctor has have registered with the company, perhaps buy x supplies every year? I'm not to clear on that. Basically, I created a patient account, but had to supply by dr's account #, which she gave me in her office. Why? b/c it's pharmaceutical-grade. If you google UltraMeal, though, lots of sites come up, so I think some other company manufactures it & the company I go through basically just sells it through dr's. There's another UltraMeal protein shake that's called UltraMeal Clear (there might be a "Plus" before or after Clear, it's been over a year since I had it). In any case, it has really low carbs compared to the regular UltraMeals (or soy & rice), is 160 cal's (if I remember right), but still has fiber, high protein, & lots of nutrients. It's supposed to help clear your system/detoxification - if you're into that sort of holistic approach.
I'm glad to see that you're losing weight! Keep it up man!!!!!!!!!

Hi Chuck,
Glad to see you back & lighter too! Awesome! I thought of you yesterday when I was typing this ridiculously long post on Lori2's profile about the fact that I'm going to start a protein shake, fruit, veggie diet. Losing weight is certainly one of the motivations, but getting rid of my food allergies, & having my plantar fasciitis heal are prime goals - actually losing weight is pretty necessary for my feet to heal, so that's a big motivator. It sucks to be in pain every single time I get up to walk & every single time I exercise - even lifting weights b/c that stupid gym floor is like cement, whatever the material is, it's HARD. I'll let you know how it goes :} My goal is to start Tuesday, 7/30

Hi again Chuck. I never thought to think about the differences in the product between Australian standards and US standards...yours has a lot more carbs than our product.
You can buy the Ketostix at chemists, ($10 for 50 sticks) and for me, they were the funnest part of low carbing! They let you see if you’re in ketosis or not without having to go to the doc. (a lot cheaper too I’d think).
Thought I’d add a link...it’s got some info on Ketostixs and other stuff you might find interesting.

Good luck with your goals this week!

Easy to mix and even easier to enjoy, OPTIFAST 800 Powder Formula provides 100% of the Daily Value (DV) for 24 vitamins and minerals in 5 servings.
Nutritional Information
Calories 160
Protein (g) 14
Carbohydrate (g) 20
Fat (g) 3
Sodium (mg) 230
Potassium (mg) 470
Fiber (g) 0
Vitamins & Minerals 10-40% of RDI
Lactose (g) 8-12
You do go into ketosis even with the carbs I am consuming on 5 optifasts per day. I think this is related to the reduction of the foods and the increase in water per day. The body is an amazing engine and adjusts to changes quickly. For me it took three days and then the hunger went away and it was easy after that. This probably varies from person to person but I was determined then as I am trying to find that determination now.

Hi again...I definitely understand where your coming from with the ketosis...low carb diets are very popular now days and they do seem to help a lot of people. Unfortunately, with the amount of Optifast shakes you’re consuming each day, and this doesn’t include the meal...your consuming 75g of digestible carbohydrate (fibre isn’t included and Optifast doesn’t contain any). Add another shake to that when you minus the meal and that’ll get you to 90g carbohydrates a day. As far as I know, you may not go into ketosis while consuming those levels of carbohydrates. In the past, when you did this before, did you use Ketostix (not sure what you may call them) to check for ketones in your urnine? I’m very curious about this because my own experiences with low carb diets required me to consume fewer than 40g of carbs a day before ketosis would kick in...and I started off at 60g and gradually worked down (but everyone is different). For memory, Atkins recommends 20g a day in their two week induction phase, but for those who have a lot of weight to lose it’s suggested to continue with this level while ever you’re feeling well. Stage two of the Atkins diet involves the gradual increase of carbohydrates into the diet until you find the optimum amount in which you’re still losing...albeit at a slower rate of 1-2lbs a week. Other popular low carbohydrate diets recommend 'roughly' the same induction phase as Atkins...with a gradual increase in carbs later.
Let me know what you think...

The number of Optifast I am suppose to drink is five along with at least 64 oz of water. The theory behind the number of optifast is the same behind eating several small meals a day instead of 2-3 larger meals per day. I consume Optifast every three hours starting at 7 am in the morning. As shown in multiple health books and programs many small meals during the day keeps you from carb overloading and can speed up your metabolism. The water is to flush the toxins from your system and to keep you hyderated during the day which is important during rapid weight loss. Programs like Optifast must be doctor monitored and have a dietian and support structure to help individuals to develop the long term lifestyle changes needed to keep the weight off.
